The one I have downstairs in my living room right now is fairly small, only about 400 gallons, but I built it with bricks, and used a 1200 gph pump, which is strong enough to push the water through a 5 gallon bucket I made into a biological filter, and to push the water through a sand/carbon "water scrubber" (not so sure what you call it) filter to keep the water clear. The size is really contingent on what kind of room you have. I built one that took up almost an entire room (On the bottom floor in a split level) and then built a wooden deck with chairs a table a couple of heat lamps and a few shop lights with T8 bulbs and a high kelvin output for good light. That one was 2000 gallons. They would be good QT setups, I think. I have two show fish in my own downstairs, and while they are getting a little big for such a paltry sized structure, my water turnover is roughly 3 times an hour. The only thing I feel I am facing as a problem at the moment is the two biggest are unable to turn head down and dig in the gravel, since they have gotten simply too big. :(

It may be time to move out to the country and build proper ponds for my prizes. I used to breed dozens of different types of poison frogs, and this whole process feels like an extension of that. I already have a good working knowledge of how the different filters work, and am okay with the whole DIY thing. There are some real holes in my knowledge where koi are concerned though, so I am hoping to learn some good things here. Thanks for the warm welcome folks!!

What sizes can they be made into or is it just one size? This sounds like a great QT tank setup, can you go into more detail...filtration/size/gallons/ and any other helpful information.

Welcome to the group John!

I currently build indoor ponds here in the Pacific Northwest. They are very fun, and you can move them with you should you relocate. It rains here a lot, and we have alot of problems with Herons and racoons, so I think my idea is a good in this area - You can observe your fish from indoors, where it is dry, and if you somehow have herons and racoons still getting at your fish, you have bigger problems to worry about!!!

I am having some marketing problems, as I would like to make this viable to the point of profit. Any ideas?
